Information about Lead to Read:

Here is info on Lead to Read:

  • Mission:  Our mission is to help kids in grades 1 through 4 improve their basic reading skills by reading one-on-one with a trusted, caring adult from the community
  • Vision:  By 2020, every urban child educated in the Kansas City area will be read to each week by a Reader.
  • Lead to Read is a donor-funded program that’s free to kids in Kansas City-area urban schools* – where kids and volunteers bond over books.

Here’s how it works:

Lead to Read connects trusted, caring adult volunteers (called Readers) from every walk of life with kids in grades 1 through 4. Once a week, for 30 minutes, Readers and kids explore the world by reading books provided by the children’s teachers, in the safety and security of an elementary school classroom.
